REJOICING INDIA’S HISTORIC SERIES WIN IN ENGLAND

India won the Test series 1-0 by drawing the third Test at The Oval. Rahul Dravid’s men have emulated Ajit Wadekar’s team in 1971 and Kapil Dev’s team in 1986 as the only Indian teams to win a test series in England.

Review of the Oval Test
India posted a mammoth first innings total of 664 runs, all the Indian batsmen making contribution to it. Dinesh Karthik once again came up with a good knock. But he was unlucky to be dismissed 9 runs short of a century. Sachin too missed a century. But the surprise package was Anil Kumble, who scored his maiden test hundred. Dhoni’s blitz of 91 gave impetus to the innings.

England was dismissed for 345 in their first innings. They were 319 runs short of Indian score. Dravid decided not to enforce follow on. In their second innings Indians were soon reduced to 11 for 3 wickets. Ganguly played a fluent innings while Dravid made 12 off 96 balls. India declared their second innings on 180 losing 6 wickets. England was set a target of 500 in the fourth innings with 110 overs to bat.

England openers made good start in their second innings. Pietersen scored his second century of the series. He demonstrated that he is the best batsman in the world after the likes of Lara, Sachin, Dravid and Ponting. Michael Vaughan and Paul Collingwood ably supported him. Ian Bell too came up with a good knock. On the whole, all the English batsmen batted well in the second innings and in the process thwarted India’s chances of winning this Test series 2-0.

Review of the Test Series
One of the striking features of this Test series was opening partnerships of Wasim Jaffer and Dinesh Karthik. They had established themselves as regular openers atleast for the time being. Another striking feature was bowling of our pace bowlers. Zaheer Khan has now become truly the spearhead of this attack. RP Singh has emerged as an important member of Indian pace attack. Dhoni showed that he could play any type of innings in accordance to the situation of the game. He played restraining innings at Lord’s and belligerent knock at The Oval. However his wicket-keeping skills need to be improved.

The trio of Sachin, Ganguly and Laxman had batted consistently well throughout this test series. Even though they had not came up with any big innings they produced important knocks at crucial junctions. They looked determined throughout this series. Only worrying factor is decline of Rahul Dravid’s batting form. He was also widely criticized for not enforcing follow-on in the Oval Test. Personally he had tough time in this series. Anyway he must be the proud captain of this Indian team.
