INDIA’S ONE-DAY CAMPAIGN AGAINST ENGLAND

England won the last one-dayer at Lords to clinch the 7 match one-day series 4-3. It was a closely fought one-day series, which India should have won comfortably. India had lost this one-day series because of wrong team-composition, poor fielding and lack of multi-talented players.

Playing only two pace bowlers in a match is suicidal in this age. But Dravid did exactly that. Not once but thrice in this series. To be fair on him, with unfit Munaf and inconsistent Agarkar, he did not have enough ammunition in the squad. Indian one-day squad had too many openers and no all-rounders. There are not many all-rounders in the domestic circuit. Team India needs Irfan Pathan back with bang. Each position in the playing XI has a specific role. Indian squad is packed with good players but not with suitable players for specific roles.

Indian fielding was pathetic throughout the series. Ganguly and Dravid are never great movers in the field but that is acceptable. But what happened to youngsters like RP Singh and Ramesh Powar (he is 28 or 29). Munaf is currently the worst fielder in world cricket. Besides that he continues to have fitness problems.

Indian tail is the weakest one in world cricket. Agarkar and Powar have failed to translate their batting prowess in domestic cricket to international cricket. To make up for weak tail Team India is forced to play with 7 batsmen. Bowling at the death is another weak point. India lacks genuine quick bowler who bowls well at the death.

Indian selectors have a huge responsibility before them to identify correct players for the team requirements.
