TOURNAMENT VICTORIES IN SACHIN ERA

1. Asia Cup Final 1991 vs Srilanka
Pakistan did not participate in this tournament held in India. India, Srilanka and Bangladesh are the three teams that had participated. Srilanka was not a great force then.

2.
Hero Cup Final 1993 vs West Indies
India, West Indies, South Africa, Srilanka and Zimbabwe were the five teams that had participated. Pakistan pulled out at the last minute. In the first league match India was routed for 100 runs against Windies. In the semi-finals against South Africa, Sachin bowled the famous last over ahead of legendary Kapil Dev at the behest of wicket-keeper Vijay Yadav to win a thriller for India. In the finals, Kapil conceded only 18 runs in 10 overs for 2 top-order wickets. Sachin accounted for his greatest batting rival Lara. Kumble scalped the last 6 wickets. I expected Kapil to get MOM for his all-round display on that day, but it was given to Kumble for his sixer with the ball.

3.
Singer Cup Final 1994 vs Srilanka
It is the series where Sachin scored his first one-day century, (in his 78th match) against Australia. India, Pakistan, Srilanka and Australia were the four teams that have participated. India’s match against Pakistan was cancelled due to rain. It was the match that Mr. Manoj Prabhakar claimed to have said that Kapil had offered him a bribe to under-perform. It was a different story that Gandhian Prabhakar was found to be one of the main culprit later. Finals was reduced to 25 overs a side due to rain.

4.
Wills World Series Final 1994 vs West Indies
India, West Indies and New Zealand were the three teams in the series. Sachin’s MOM in the finals was his first in a cup final.

5.
Asia Cup Final 1995 vs Srilanka
India, Pakistan, Srilanka and Bangladesh participated in this Asia cup held in Sharjah.

6.
Titan Cup Final 1996 vs Srilanka
It was the only tournament victory under Sachin’s captaincy. South Africa was really invincible at that time under Hansie Cronje and Bob Woolmer. Australia was the third team. In a league match against Australia at Bangalore, at one stage India was facing an improbable task of chasing more than 6 runs an over with two wickets in hand. As usual Sachin departed at most crucial juncture of the game. Srinath and Kumble won that match for us. It was one of the most memorable and enjoyable one-day matches I have watched. Indians prevailed over invincible South Africans in the finals.

7. Silver Jubilee Independence Cup 1998 vs Pakistan
Azhar was reinstated as Captain of the team. Sachin was batting at middle-order briefly then. From the second league match onwards he was restored to his familiar opening position. Rest was Sachin’s dhamaka. The year 1998 turned out to be most productive year for him in one-dayers.
I Final: India won the first final.
II Final: Pakistan won the second final.
III Final: India won the third final and the tournament. Ganguly scored his first century in the cup finals. Ganguly and Robin Singh engaged in a match-winning partnership. Sachin scored a fantastic cameo at the top. Hrishikesh Kanitkar came to brief limelight because of his winning hits in that match.

8.
Coca-Cola Cup Final 1998 vs Australia
It is purely remembered for Sachin’s back to back centuries against Australia. One tournament-winning (though ended in a loss) and another match-winning knock in the finals on his birthday. India was facing elimination from the tournament and had to score 254 to enter finals and 285 to win the match. Sand Strom disrupted the play by about 25 minutes and target to win was reduced to 276 in 46 overs and 237 in 46overs to enter finals. India managed to enter the finals but not able to win that match. But the crowd was happy because of Sachin’s magnificent knock and India’s entry into the finals.

9. Coca-Cola Triangular Series Final 1998 vs Kenya
India, Bangladesh and Kenya participated in the tournament. India suffered a rare defeat against Kenya in the league game. India trounced Kenya in the finals.

10.
Singer-Akai Nidahas Trophy Final 1998 vs Srilanka
Both Sachin and Ganguly scored centuries in the finals. They established world-record for best opening partnership in one-dayers at that time.

11.
Coca-Cola Champions Trophy Final 1998 vs Zimbabwe
India, Srilanka and Zimbabwe were the three teams in the fray. Ajit Agarkar won a game with his bat against Srilanka in the league encounter, who has failed to demonstrate his batting potential in International arena. Zimbabwe defeated India in the league encounter with Henry Olanga scalping Sachin. Everyone billed Sachin’s plundering of Olanga in the finals as revenge.

12.
NatWest Series Final 2002 vs England
Rahul Dravid and Yuvraj helped India chasing the highest target successfully at Lords in the first league encounter against England. It was again repeated in the finals. The highlight of the finals was Yuvraj-Kaif partnership. Earlier Ganguly and Sehwag were in blazing mood but India lost quick wickets and were suddenly 146 for 5. Srilanka was the third team.

13.
ICC Champions Trophy Final 2002 vs Srilanka
India shared the trophy with Srilanka. The finals were played twice and both the times rain ruined the match. The semi-finals match against South Africa was a thriller. Yuvraj-Sehwag combined together to produce a great win for India. Both excelled with the bat. Then Sehwag with his bowling and Yuvraj with his spectacular catching sealed that match. India would have won the finals had rains not intervened.

14,
TVS Cup Final 2003 vs South Africa
It was held just after 2003 World Cup in Bangladesh. Sachin and Dravid were rested for that tournament. India was struggling in the finals before rain saved them. It was one of the rare occasions when rain saved India. Both India and South Africa shared the trophy.

15. Commonwealth Bank Series 2008 vs Australia
After a long time Sachin delivered for India when it needed the most. It was Dhoni’s first tournament victory in one-dayers.
I Final
II Final
