I think only 15 players are allowed in a squad for a world cup. But I have selected 16 players now. One of the bowlers will be dropped on gauging their performances against West Indies and Srilanka prior to world cup. I like to have player of Ganguly's caliber. But he is not the Sourav of old. Even on his current form, he is not good enough to find a place in Indian squad. Dinesh Mongia and Suresh Raina had lot of opportunities, but they failed to utilize it. Kaif had a slump in his form. So Ganguly, Mongia, Raina and Kaif don't find a place in the squad.
Gambhir, Utthappa, Badrinath, Rohit Sharma, Venugopal Rao are the batsmen doing very well at domestic cricket. Venugopal Rao has already played for India, but he is batting bit slower i.e., he is consuming lot of balls. Between Gambhir and Utthappa, only one can be selected. On account of his experience, Gambhir picks himself. Rohit Sharma has done well at under-19 world cup and at Australia for Indian 'A' team. Badrinath has done consistently well at domestic cricket and also at Australia for India 'A' team. Even though Rohit Sharma has played only one or two Ranji matches, he is a good talent. So, between Badrinath and Rohit Sharma, I pick Rohit Sharma.
VRV Singh and RP Singh are good pace bowling prospects. But they need experience at domestic level. You may find my selection of Rohit Sharma little paradoxical, but he is an exceptional talent. So experience doesn’t count against him.
