Here are few players, I feel, who would be the new stars of their respective teams from this world cup.
1. ROBIN UTHAPPA
A dashing opener from Karnataka, India. He earned the Indian cap by virtue of his strong domestic performance. He created a great impact in his first few matches. His performances against West Indies at Chennai and Srilanka at Vizag are testimony to his abilities. Besides being a dashing batsman, he is a good fielder too. One can expect good fireworks from him in this world cup.
2. MUNAF PATEL
He is fondly called as Baruch Express. He is reputed as being fastest bowler of India in the domestic circuit, bowling around mid 140s (kmph) regularly. But he is used as McGrath-like bowler bowling consistently in the corridor outside off-stump, sacrificing some of his pace for accuracy. His fitness and fielding is always a worry. I believe he will surprise the whole cricketing world by his good performances in this world cup. I hope he improves his fitness level and fielding abilities. He may be the solution to our long search for a genuine world-class bowler.
3. MITCHELL JOHNSON
He has McGrath’s accuracy and Brett Lee’s speed, though a yard or two lesser than Lee. His recent performances may not be that spectacular, but “cometh the hour, cometh the man”. Who can forget his fantastic display against Indian batting line-up at Malaysia? He will spearhead Australian bowling attack after McGrath’s retirement.
4. LASITH MALINGA
It is nice to see an express bowler from Srilanka, although they have few of them now, creating havoc among the opposition rank. He is just getting tasted to success. He may be expensive, but will take those crucial wickets with the toe-crushing yorkers. This man with slinging action and eye-catching hairstyle will be one of the bowlers to be watch out for.
5. AB DE VILLIERS
He is an aggressive batsman and a great fielder. He can open as well as bat in the middle-order. Wherever he bats one thing is sure; run rate will be on the rise. He can easily take the mantle from Gibbs after his tenure. His positivity will definitely add to the cause of South Africans.
6. MOHAMMAD ASIF
I don’t know whether he will play this world cup or not. You may be surprised to see him as new star, one who is spearheading his country’s bowling attack; he is still under the shadows of Sohaib Akhtar. Actually he is far better than his famous partner Sohaib. He may not be an express as Sohaib but definitely have accuracy and enough pace. If he is cleared to play this world cup, Pakistan is a serious contender for this world cup.
7. ROSS TAYLOR
To be frank I don’t know anything about him, I have not seen him playing. But what I heard about him through media is exciting. After Martin Crowe he may be the best Kiwi batsman in their cricketing history in last three decades. He along with Bond may provide the necessary flair to this dull but effective Kiwi side.
8. JEROME TAYLOR
West Indies is known for producing battery of fast bowlers one after another. But after Walsh and Ambrose they clearly struggled in this department, Taylor is the bright hope emerging there. Taylor has the pace to rattle any batting line-up. His successes may be here and there. In this world cup he may be blossomed into a premier fast bowler in the world.
9. CHAMARA SILVA
He is an exciting prospect from Srilanka though he made his debut 6 or 7 years ago. His initial years were not successful. He had good performance against Kiwis in the recent test match against them and a good hundred against Indians in the one-day match at Vizag. He gives stability and fillip to Srilankan middle-order, which was vulnerable in the recent past.
