This World Cup has been so far turned out to be a dull one. The probable reasons for that could be:
1. No active participation of locals. This is due to the higher ticket pricing and banning of music bands inside stadium. Music is the soul of Caribbean people. Typical Caribbean atmosphere is missing.
2. Early exit of India and Pakistan teams have obviously prevented many sub-continent fans from thronging Caribbean stadiums.
3. Of course Bob Woolmer’s murder has clearly taken the sheen out of this World Cup.
4. Because of two weak teams in Bangladesh and Ireland in Super 8 stage, the games are diluted. Semi-finalists are more or less known. I am not discounting the efforts and enthusiasm displayed by Bangladesh and Ireland teams.
The gross commercialization has been the underlying factor that has contributed to the failure of this world cup so far. If we allow commercialization to grow at the expense of aesthetics of the game we are soon going to loose this game.
Still this world cup is alive. If West Indies inspired by Brian Charles Lara can make a turnaround and manage to qualify for semifinals or England led by performances of likes of KP or Freddie or Collingwood can make an impact, atleast later part of this world cup could be an interesting one.
