The above figure gives the Indian batsmen's score and the number of balls faced in the fourth innings of the seires decider.
India vs Pakistan, 2005 Series in India
Pakistan saved the first Test match from the jaws of defeat. India won the second Test match at Kolkatta. India was leading the series 1-0 going into the third and final Test match. They were set a target of 383 in 97 overs. They managed to bat 90 overs. Just 7 overs is the difference between defeat and saving the Test match. Eventually India blew up the chance to win a Test series against Pakistan in India after a long gap. Final score line was 1-1.
3rd Test: India vs Pakistan at Bangalore, 2005
India vs England, 2006 Series in India
India managed to draw the first Test match easily with contributions from Jaffer and Dravid in the fourth innings. India won the second Test match at Mohali. India was leading the series 1-0 going into the third and final Test match. Indians were set a target of 313 in about 100 overs. But they could bat only for 48 overs. India, from the position of winning the Test series 1-0, ended up sharing the series 1-1.
3rd Test: India vs England at Mumbai, 2006
India vs South Africa, 2006-07 Series in South Africa
India won the first Test match at Wanderers (its first Test victory on South African soil) with the help of excellent bowling by Sreesanth. Second Test match at Durban was affected by bad light. India failed to utilize the nature’s help to save the Test match. Had they managed to save this Test match they would have even won the series. Pressure would have been high on Proteas to save the series and eventually they might have crumbled.
2nd Test: India vs South Africa at Durban, 2006-07
They were in driver’s seat in the third and deciding Test match at Cape Town. Due to unwarranted defensive approach by Dravid and Tendulkar India ended up setting only a competitive (not a huge target) target for Proteas in the final Test match.
3rd Test: India vs South Africa at Cape Town, 2006-07
India vs Australia, 2007-08 Series in Australia
India lost the first Test match badly at Melbourne. Sachin and Laxman helped India to overhaul the huge first innings score of Australians in the second Test. If India had managed to cling on for 7 more balls they would have squared the series 1-1 instead of 1-2 defeat.
2nd Test: India vs Australia at Sydney, 2007-08
Only Consolation
The only consoling performance was against England at Lord’s. With the help of nature and Dhoni’s determination, India was able to save the first Test match and eventually went on to win the series by beating England 1-0.

Big Gun’s Performances
The performances of all the top order batsmen was pathetic, especially Dravid’s and Tendulkar’s. They were ultra-defensive while they were trying to bat out the overs. It is time they put up their hands and do the job for the team when they encounter the same situation in the future. Dhoni is the only batsmen whose performance is notable.
