I have planned to bring out the performances of India in Test matches since the debut of Sachin Tendulkar in 1989. I have divided his era into four periods. First of these periods is ‘Dark Period’ which is presented here.
Duration: 1989 Pakistan series to 1992 South Africa series
Main Actors: None
Support Actors: Kapil Dev, Manjerkar & Azhar
Promising Actors: Sachin, Kumble & Srinath
Captains: Srikanth & Azhar
Coaches: BS Bedi, Abbas Ali Baig
Highs: Series draw in Pakistan (1989)
Lows: 4-0 Series loss in Australia (1991-92)
India played all their matches abroad in this period (except for 1 match against Lankans). India was able to draw the series against strong Pakistan side, comprising Imran, Akram, Qadir and Waqar (making debut), under Srikanth’s captaincy. Sachin made his debut in this series. India lost the series against New ZealandEngland. But they played well in those series except for the lost matches. Sachin scored his first Test century in the series against England. and
India lost badly down under 4-0. They were in strong position at Sydney Test, which was the only match they didn’t loose. Shastri scored a double century and Sachin scored unbeaten 148; Shane Warne made his debut in that match. In Perth Sachin scored his next century which he himself rates as his best ever.
They lost the series against Proteas 1-0. Pravin Amre scored century on his debut at Durban. Third umpire was introduced first time in this match. Sachin was the first player to be dismissed by a third umpire verdict. In the second Test match Sachin scored a century and became the youngest player to cross 1000 runs. In the third Test match, Kapil Dev scored a fighting century (his last) in a loosing cause.
