Pakistan beat Srilanka by 8 wickets with 10 balls to spare in the finals at Lord’s on Sunday. Earlier Srilanka made 138 runs in their 20 overs. Only their captain Sangakkara made substantial score and others failed to deliver. Srilankans were splendid throughout the tournament but they failed to deliver when it mattered the most.
Scorecard: Pakistan vs Srilanka, T20 Finals, Lord’s , 2009.
Splendid All-round Performance by Pakistan
Throughout this tournament they made brakes on the opposition batting with their splendid bowling with Umar Gul and Sahid Afridi being their leading lights. In the finals it is the turn of Abdul Razzaq to be the leading bowler.
Sahid Afridi, who had excelled with ball throughout the tournament, came good with the bat in the two most important games: The Semi-Finals and Finals. Sahid Afridi was incidentally the Player of the Tournament in the previous edition and bagged back-to-back Man of the Match in the Semis and Finals in this edition. Afridi’s performance reflected how the Pakistanis palyed this tournament.
Younis’s Appeal
This T20 triumph gives the terrorist-hit Pakistan something to cheer about. Younis Khan, the captain of Pakistan team, made a fervent appeal to the cricketing world to play in Pakistan. His observation that Cricket can divert youngsters from becoming terrorists is correct and so his country needs cricket. But the thing is after that incident happened to Srilankan players early this year and the current political situation in Pakistan being so dangerous, no team will visit Pakistan in the near future. First thing needed is bringing stability and normality in Pakistan. I hope Pakistan achieve this very soon. T20 triumph is first step in the all the good things they are hoping for.
